The Sure Start Maternity Grant, the UK equivalent of the well-known Polish “becikowe,” is a one-off, tax-free payment offered to parents who need financial help when their baby is born.
A payment of £500 transferred directly to your account can be an invaluable form of support during a time when expenses and responsibilities quickly pile up.
To qualify, the family must prove low income and either you or your partner must get one of these benefits:
Income Support,
income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance,
income-related Employment and Support, Allowance
Pension Credit,
Universal Credit,
Following recent changes to the benefit system, this grant is now available only for the first child.
